River Ecology Teacher Workshop

Cook Forest State Park and the North Central Region Math/Science Education Collaborative will conduct a ‘River Ecology Teacher Workshop’:

What: River Ecology Workshop
Who: 4th –12th grade Teachers
When: August 13, 2008
Time: 8:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.
Where: Cook Forest State Park, Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom
Group Size:  25
Act 48 Credit: 7 hours
Lunch:  Bring bag lunch, refreshment provided
Dress:  Bring rain gear, proper river footwear, sturdy “river-walking stick”, and extra set of clothes
Cost:  $100

Teachers will receive a copy of W. Patrick McCafferty’s “Aquatic Entomology: The Fishermen’s and Ecologists Illustrated Guide to Insects and Their Relatives”.

This workshop will emphasize hands-on activities related to the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of a stream.  We will car-pool to various sites to sample for fish, macroinvertebrates, salamanders, and flow on the Clarion River.  Be prepared to get wet and be wet all day, so please dress appropriately. Workshop will go rain or shine.  Proper river footwear is a must (old sneakers are good, flip-flops are bad).  Bring an extra change of clothes.  A sturdy “river-walking stick” will be useful.

Many of the activities from the GLOBE Hydrology Protocol will be covered for those currently involved in the GLOBE program.
