About the Collaborative
Established with funds from a small Challenge Grant offered to seven regions in Pennsylvania by the Mid-Atlantic Eisenhower Consortium, the North Central Region Mathematics/Science Education Collaborative is a non-profit (501(c)3) organization located at 108 Becht Hall, Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
MISSION
The mission of the mathematics/science Collaborative is to improve science and mathematics learning in K-12 classrooms.
GOALS
I. Improve mathematics and science learning in classrooms and increase the number of students electing to choose a mathematics or science related course of study in postsecondary education.
II. Offer a teaching strategy to rural teachers that has proven to increase student learning and attitudes toward science and mathematics.
III.Provide resources to rural teachers that will enable them to keep updated and will permit them to disseminate their progress and activities to others.
PHILOSOPHY
It is the philosophy of the Collaborative that all children can learn. Children become ready to learn different kinds of tasks at different times. Based on the principles that patterns drive understanding and that meaning is more critical to children than information, the Collaborative promotes teaching and learning strategies that are interdisciplinary, related to real world problems and issues, incorporate a variety of technologies into the teaching/learning process, begin with concept (mind) mapping and/or similar activities which provide insight into gaps in understanding and at the same time structures the topic(s) for study. The Collaborative is founded on the principle so well stated by Albert Einstein, "learning is experience. Everything else is just information".
